SSL Certificates Ecommerce Website Security

Secure Certificates for Encrypted Solutions

One of the biggest fears people have about using the internet, or more in particular, buying on the internet is security. What if my credit card number gets stolen? What if the store I am buying from is not legitimate? That is precisely what a SSL certificate is for.

Secure Pages for Ecommerce Web Sites

When someone places an order on your website, chances are they are using a credit card. If the proper security is in place when your customer's credit card and private information is transmitted it is encrypted to keep anyone from anyone else seeing and copying it.

When you connect to a secure web server to make a purchase, the server presents this certificate to authenticate itself. The valid certificate proves that an independent trusted third party (Verisign and GeoTrust are 2 SSL cert companies that do this) has verified that the website they are about to process a credit card through belongs to the company/ entity it claims to belong to. A valid certificate serves to give your customers confidence that they are sending their personal information securely, and to the right place.

Secure Socket Layer Certificates can provide your customer with ultimate proof of your website's identity, and they can have confidence in the integrity and security of your online business. E-commerce customers are demanding this of the websites that they want to do business with. You can often find proof of a SSL certified website by looking somewhere on the home page or transaction page for a logo like this:

The web site certificate contains information about the owner of the Ecommerce website:
  • Owner's Name
  • Certificate Usage
  • Duration of Validity
  • Resource Location or Distinguished Name (DN) which includes the Common Name (CN)
  • Web Site or Email Address Depending of Usage
  • Certificate ID of the Certifying Authority
  • The Public Key
  • A hash to Ensure the Certificate has not Been Tampered With

How SSL Secure Certificates Work

The Secure Socket Layer protocol is used to ensure secure transactions between web servers and browsers. The protocol uses a third party, a Certificate Authority (CA), to identify one end or both end of the transactions.
  • A browser requests a secure page (usually https://)
  • The web server sends its public key with its certificate
  • Browser verifies the certificate was issued by a trusted party
  • Browser verifies Certificate is still valid
  • Browser verifies the certificate is related to the site contacted
  • The browser uses the public key, to encrypt a random symmetric encryption key
  • It is then sent to the server with the encrypted URL required as well as other encrypted http data
  • The server decrypts the symmetric encryption key using its private key and uses the symmetric key to decrypt the URL and http data
  • The web server sends back the requested html document and http data encrypted with the symmetric key
  • The browser decrypts the http data and html document using the symmetric key and displays the information.
Private Key and Public Key:
The encryption using a private key/public key pair ensures the data is encrypted by one key but can only be decrypted by the other key. The private key is kept secret and the the public key used for everybody. Anybody can send you an encrypted message but only can decrypt it.

SSL Certificates
Because your visitors trust the person or organization who signs your certificate they trust the certificate on your website. This is the certificate trust tree or certificate path.

Sometimes browsers or applications have already loaded the root certificate of well known Certification Authorities (CA) or root CA Certificates. The CA maintains a list of all signed certificates as well as a list of revoked certificates. A certificate is not secure until it is signed. Only a signed certificate cannot be modified. You can sign a certificate using itself, it is called a self signed certificate. All root CA certificates are self signed.
